Canker sores are the most common condition in the oral cavity affecting the soft tissue and it impacts about 15-20% of the population worldwide. Most patients who are diagnosed with a canker sore are primarily healthy. However, those with systemic conditions or compromised immune systems are more susceptible, specifically those with Bechet’s syndrome and chronic gastrointestinal malabsorption disturbances (Crohn’s and celiac disease) that create nutritional deficiencies of folic acid, vitamin B12, and iron. Recently, there has been an increase in Canker Sore cases reported and there is reason to believe that it may be linked to the stress of COVID-19. Our mental health is inextricably connected to physical and oral health. Increased stress from COVID-19, along with other preexisting medical conditions, have been seen to result in painful oral lesions.
