Most pet owners, and world-wide population, will agree that pets are great at bringing laughter and love to our homes. However, recent research done at Washington State University has discovered that just ten minutes of interacting with cats and dogs can offer a genuinely positive physiological response. When we stress, the body releases cortisol (a stress hormone) impairing our body’s ability to heal itself and in turn increasing our stress levels even more. Increased cortisol, in our bodies, causes stomach upsets, inability to sleep, aches and pains, weight gain and headaches.
For animal lovers, of course, this is all pretty obvious. Snuggling with your cat or playing with your pooch self-evidently makes you feel better – we know this in our gut. But now we can say scientific evidence proves we can all benefit from the love that animals bring us.
